September 2007

What an awesome week!

It’s hard to believe demo happened last Thursday and the house was finished on Tuesday! The house was set to go up in 106 hours and due to the awesome management team and dedicated volunteers, the house was completed in 99.5 hours.

This house is Extreme Makeover – Home Edition’s 100th house and will air on November 25, 2007 as a two hour special on ABC.

As with most makeover homes, this one is no exception in it’s beauty, creativity, and personality. The attention to detail is exemplified in it’s uniqueness and class. The off-camera designers are incredible.

The week was intense. Lots of trades, lots of on-camera time, little sleep, and the constant possibility of color changes made the project unlike any other. The sea of excited spectators kept the workers informed when a designer was in close proximity. One spectator asked me if I was from California — as if I worked with EMHE designers. I laughed and returned to my designated area to continue cleaning paint brushes for the guys.

Since my dad was making his rounds with his camera – I sent him on a mission to capture a few pics of Ty. He called minutes later to let me know he’s already talked to Ty and he would look for me in the house. My career at Deluxe has been worth it. I’ve met Ty!

All-in-all, the project was a lot of fun. I learned a lot about the industry I work in, I learned a lot about the staff I work with, and I learned a lot about things that interest me. But to top it off, it was great to contribute to a work of art for a family who will really benefit from immense generosity after such a tough year.

I’m so grateful that hundreds of companies could come together for a common cause — and make a difference in a way that gives great hope to people. I’m even more excited that my theory on ending poverty is more realistic today.

Most companies had a maximum of 4 weeks to prepare for this project. And the way this project came together — and does 25 times a year, is the exact idea we can bring an end to poverty around the world — only if we allocate our resources more appropriately.

I’m excited to see where the Extreme Makeover momentum leads us in the weeks & months to come. Let’s just jump in, get our feet wet, and join the wave to help better someone’s quality of living.

Because, who you are can make a difference…

It’s official and the secret is finally out!

ABC’s Extreme Makeover – Home Edition is underway in Minnetonka, Minnesota. The show is aired internationally in 69 different countries, with a weekly viewership of 1 billion people. ABC receives approximately 3,000-5,000 applications a day, but they can only select 25 families a year.

The company I work with has partnered with the builder to complete the exterior & interior painting as well as the fine wood finishing for this home.

It is so exciting that in a tough housing market, trades can come together and give their time and resources to bless a family who could really use some extra help. Did you know that nobody receives monetary compensation for the time or material on this project? Generosity. And people are excited about it.

It’s awesome.

Mother Theresa said, “It is not the magnitude of our actions, but the amount of love that is put into them that matters.”

Check out the website and meet our family. And may this project not only impact this family, but transform our communities. The ripple effect will happen if we “love until it hurts. Then love some more.”
